Hallways can be tricky, coordinating the styles and colors in adjoining rooms. However it’s also a great opportunity to make a style statement, a jumping off point for the other spaces.
This is what Dawn was looking for when she asked for help with her hallway. The space connects her gorgeous back yard, sitting room, kitchen, laundry and guest bathroom. She wanted to find wallpaper that didn’t cost a fortune but would add some color. Looking at her sitting room, I could see that she loved reddish coral, blues, and greens.
Knowing Dawn, I thought the Palm Beach style fit her perfectly. Palm Beach style incorporates punchy colors, natural materials, lots of white, and a touch of glam. These rooms feel exuberant and lively, which perfectly describes Dawn.

Design Inspiration
Here’s another example of Palm Beach style. There’s lots of white, but also plenty of bright color and natural elements.
This last example is a more eclectic example with white walls and natural mirrors still giving all the Palm Beach vibes. Also note the traditional furniture in light patterns, mixed with colorful, graphic pillows and bright solids. The not-so-subtle palm tree is a bit much in my opinion, but I love the rest of the room.
This last room is my favorite example, because Dawn has lots of black in her house already. I love the kelley green accents!
The Current Space
Here’s a look at Dawn’s current hallway and adjoining rooms. There’s a sitting room and a wall of windows that look out onto her gorgeous backyard.
The Design Plan
If budget allows, I’d love to see Dawn extend the tile from her bathroom into the hallway. However, if that isn’t an option, I’d add a couple of runners like the one in the design below. I like the black because it ties to the other rooms. A simple seagrass runner (like this one) would also be a great option.
I’ve given Dawn three choices of wallpaper in the the design below. I chose these for the color and modern graphic they add to the hallway, as well as the affordable price point. Any of them would be a great jumping off point to add color in those rooms. The bottom one is probably my favorite for working with the existing finishes, but I like them all. To keep it simple, everything suggested is from Wayfair, and it’s budget-friendly.
If she does choose to paint, I’ve selected three cheerful colors that could work with the more earthy tones in the existing flooring. The first is SW Malted Milk, a grown-up peachy pink with brown undertones. Secondly, SW Misty, a soft gray blue with green undertones. Finally, a warm white, like SW Creamy could also be a good choice. Before painting any of these, though, I would test it in the space. The lighting in the room can change everything! Another thing to consider is that darker, earthy tile colors will make everything around it appear brighter. So what looks like a soft gray on a paint chip, might end up a bright blue green on the wall.
I’ve also suggested a gorgeous modern beach scene painting, and a mirror that works with the Palm Beach style. If there’s enough space for it, a pretty sconce in the hallway is a great way to add light when there’s no room for a lamp. The white wood carving is another option for the walls. Finally, a big plant is a must in this area, even a fake palm would be so pretty.
I hope this help you, Dawn! And we would love to see pictures of the finished room.
